A necklace is a type of jewellery piece worn around the neck. And you obviously know that! But how did it come into existence and why is it so popular? Let’s talk walk down history and discover a few things about necklaces!
Necklaces may have been the earliest forms of adornment used by humans. Prehistoric people made necklaces using natural material like bone, feathers, shells, etc. Using metals for necklaces came into being in the Bronze Age. During the Renaissance period, men wore chains and pendants around their necks. Heavy jewellery was worn to show off an individual’s wealth.
In the 16th century, long pearl ropes and chains with precious stones became common. Chokers made an appearance after last being seen in the ancient times. The 17th century saw the invention of diamond cutting techniques which made precious stone jewellery popular. In the 18th century, imitation stones and gold were invented. Colourful and whimsical necklaces were also popular in this time. During the 19th century, Empress Eugenie popularized multiple necklaces. There was also a rise of pearl necklaces.
In the 20th century, costume jewellery was popularized. Glass beads were used in long ropes. Chunky, geometric jewellery was created with the Art Deco movement. The costume jewellery also gave rise to seasonal changing styles of necklaces. Men started wearing pendant necklaces made of leather or metal chains.
Now that we know the historic journey of necklaces, let’s take a look at how to maximize your outfit with one.
Adding a simple accessory to your daily outfit can take it up quite a few notches. You can dress up or down your outfit simply by switching your necklaces. Here’s an example. For example, you are wearing a simple white t-shirt and blue jeans. A dainty chain will give you an effortless look whereas a choker will give an edge to your basic look. Similarly, a strand of pearls speaks chic & classy whereas a geometric shaped necklace speaks bold & edgy.
Though there are many types of necklaces in the world of fashion, how do you know what to pair each type with? Here is a simple guide on how to pair necklaces with necklines.
A quick cheat trick – The higher your neckline, the longer your necklace should be. And the lower your neckline, the higher your necklace should be.
A turtleneck covers your entire neck which makes it ideal to show off those long necklaces you have. A long chain with a pendant or even a long strand of beads or pearls look great with this one.
A crew neck is one of the most regular necklines for t-shirts. These look great when paired with a bib or collar necklace.
Flaunt your decolletage by pairing a strapless neckline with a choker necklace.
Collar necklaces work really well to show off your collar bone.
This kind of neckline is best paired with princess necklace. A short necklaces that ends just below the collarbone, it usually consists of lots of stones.
Bring out the geometric designs! Angular pendants or geometric necklaces work well with a square neckline.
A halter neckline gives very little space for a necklace. Hence pair this with dainty chains with small pendants.
If you are wearing a button down shirt with a closed collar, put on a statement necklace under the collar, as you would wear a tie. If you keep the collar open, you can wear slim pendants with a thin chain that ends below the collar bone.
Again, one of the most popular necklines for basic t-shirts, pair this with a slim pendant.
