The fashion world is full of colours and surprises! Things you can never imagine are trendy here. And for good reason. Fashion is often a way for us to escape the madness of the real world. One such trend that I am going to talk about today is Sequins. The shiny pieces atop your clothes and accessories that make you look like a disco ball! 😀
So how did sequins come into the picture?
The very first idea of putting something shiny on your clothes dates back to more than 3000 years ago. When King Tutankhamun’s tomb was opened in 1922, gold discs were found sewn on his garments.
For centuries, sequins made from metal have been embellished on garments to show off wealth. But this was only practical for the richest members of the society.
This changed in the 1920s when the sequins made from plastic were invented for the first time in New York.
These sequins were not waterproof or heatproof making them impractical for everyday use.
But they were quite a breakthrough in the fashion industry. These kind of sequins were used by performers, dancers, etc.
The sequin was finally democratized in the 1950s. It was a popular part of dance culture and was loved by celebrity figures like Mick Jagger, David Bowie, etc. With the cyclical revival of 90s trends, the sequin is back with a bang. It has been spotted on popular runways like Prabal Gurung, Gucci, etc. Updated and better, the sequin is back like never before.
Now that we know the background of a sequin, let’s look at some iconic sequin moments in the fashion world.
One of the most iconic moments of sequins in fashion is the Paco Rabanne silver sequins dress.
